22 August 2014The Cabinet has approved the ratification of the treaty on the Grand Inga hydropower project between South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), paving the way for the next phase of what could eventually become the largest hydroelectric project in the world, with the potential to power half the continent.Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Jeff Radebe made the announcement in Pretoria on Thursday following the Cabinet’s latest fortnightly meeting, which took place in Cape Town on Wednesday. The Grand Inga project will seek to harness the power potential of the Congo River, sub-Saharan Africa’s greatest waterway. Once all seven of its planned phases are complete, it is expected to generate a massive 40 000 megawatts (MW) of renewable power. Two existing dams, Inga 1 and 2, have been in operation since 1972 and 1982 respectively, together generating nearly 1 800 MW. The next phase of the Grand Inga project, Inga 3, is expected to cost in the region of US$12-billion and produce around 4 800 MW of electricity.Subsequent phases, adding up to an eventual total capacity of 40 000 MW, will allow countries in southern Africa, north-east Africa and parts of west Africa to benefit from production at the site. The Grand Inga treaty, signed by South Africa and the DRC in October, will now be tabled in Parliament. The treaty provides the framework for the facilitation of power generation from the Grand Inga project and its delivery to the border between the DRC and Zambia.According to Radebe, the ratification of the treaty paves the way for the development of Inga 3, which will provide 2 500 MW of electricity to South Africa and contribute to regional integration, energy security and economic growth in an environmentally sustainable manner.“The project has the potential to supply clean and affordable imported hydroelectric power to meet the needs of the DRC, South Africa and surrounding countries,” Radebe said.“The project holds the potential to fast-track SADC development, alleviate energy poverty, stimulate economic growth and facilitate infrastructure development.“This represents one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken on the African continent, and one which will long be a resounding symbol of the rise of Africa and her people.”Source: SAnews.gov.za
Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest By Chip TusonOne revolutionary idea can transform an entire industry overnight. At least, that’s what The Ohio State University SmartAg4.0 student competition posits to event participants. In much of the way Uber has changed how we commute and AirBnb has changed how we find accommodations, participants in SmartAg4.0 could have the next big idea to transform agriculture.“Agriculture is undergoing a significant transformation that rivals historical developments including mechanization, the ‘Green Revolution,’ or biotechnology,” said Scott Shearer, Professor and Chair at Ohio State’s Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering. “Most agricultural professionals now realize that connecting the farm to the internet (e.g., big data and data analytics) will drive sustainability and productivity of the ‘food systems’ of the future. SmartAg4.0 is designed to help students gain experience with turning ideas into new products or services that will reshape global agriculture.”SmartAg4.0 started in 2016 with the idea of offering a “hack-a-thon” style event to students in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at Ohio State. The competition ended up drawing students of all disciplines from across the university to participate, and has continued to grow since its first year. SmartAg4.0 is now open to all undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in any Ohio college or university.Students form teams to compete in the 24-hour event where they conceptualize an idea to pitch to a panel of judges from academia and representatives from industry sponsors. This year, participants will focus their idea on one of four domain topics related to the dairy industry: sustainable nutrition, sensors and smart packaging, the internet of things, and blockchain.“Students need to begin thinking about how the Internet of Things can add value to all segments of the food system — production through consumer,” Shearer said. “We’re focusing on dairy this year because it’s importance to Ohio agriculture, existing labor shortages and emerging technologies (e.g., RFID, robotic milkers, robotic feeding systems and ultra high-temperature pasteurization).”Student participants are simply asked to bring an idea and a laptop or smart device to the event. From there, they network and meet fellow students and industry leaders to help spark innovation. After forming their teams, students work through the night and morning to get ready for their pitch.“Our world must start paying more attention to environmental issues, and newly developed applications can facilitate this process,” said John Conroy, an Operations Management and Public Management major at Ohio State. “With this in mind, I thought I could get some awesome ideas and meet like-minded individuals by participating in SmartAg4.0.”Conroy and his team designed a presented a wireframe app design for an app called “InStock” which would be used by stores and restaurants to manage product and better measure food waste. Other ideas from past years include a community garden service for cities, social networking apps for consumers to learn about the farms where their food comes from, and ways for consumers to more directly track nutrition. Some student teams have gone on to pursue their ideas beyond the competition and seek commercialization.“You can get so much out of an event that only takes a weekend,” Conroy said. “You learn to work with others on a time-sensitive project, you learn to critically analyze a concept and develop solutions, and you have the opportunity to present your idea in front of professionals who are excited to listen.” SmartAg4.0 2018 takes place September 28-29 on Ohio State’s Columbus campus. If you’re a current college student interested in participating in SmartAg4.0 or represent a company interested in sponsoring this event, please visit smartag4.osu.edu. More and more builders have realized the advantages of leaving stud bays empty and putting all of a home’s insulation outside of the wall and roof sheathing. If done correctly, exterior insulation can help produce a building that is almost airtight, very well insulated, and almost immune to water damage. The construction method was first developed in the early 1960s by the National Research Council of Canada. In its purest form, the method is known as PERSIST — an acronym for Pressure-Equalized Rain-Screen Insulated Structure Technique. Here’s how you build a PERSIST house:To some builders and building inspectors, PERSIST details seem counterintuitive or dangerous. One typical reaction is, “You can’t install peel-and-stick over your wall sheathing! It’s a wrong-side vapor barrier! The membrane will trap moisture! The walls can’t dry out!”Actually, the peel-and-stick works perfectly. The membrane acts as a combined air barrier, vapor barrier, and water-resistant membrane (WRB). Because the membrane completely seals the walls and roof, it produces an unusually airtight envelope.Since the membrane is on the warm-in-winter side of the insulation, it’s exactly where it belongs. All of the home’s framing and sheathing is on the conditioned side of the membrane, so these wood components are maintained at indoor conditions. That means they aren’t subject to swings in humidity or temperature; the framing stays stable and dry in all seasons, in all climates. On the exterior side of the membrane, there aren’t any components which are likely to suffer any moisture damage. Since the system includes a rainscreen behind the siding, any water that gets past the siding drains quickly from the walls.PERSIST has a few disadvantages. It costs more than conventional construction, because of the cost of the peel-and-stick membrane, the two layers of… This article is only available to GBA Prime Members Start Free Trial Already a member?
