In summer 2007, the highway is expected to be closed from Angeles Crest Highway south to Hess Road, on the Interstate 15 side of the summit. Motorists will use Highway 18, U.S. 395 and Interstate 15 to get around that closure too. The work will add a truck lane in each direction on the northern side of the summit, and for westbound trucks on the summit’s southern side. The construction project will also widen the highway’s shoulders to eight feet to give motorists a place to pull over, and realign a curve west of Lone Pine Canyon Road, near the Mormon Rocks formation, Caltrans said. The work will also rehabilitate the pavement, which hasn’t been replaced for more than 20 years, between just east of Highway 18 and just west of Interstate 15, officials said. PHELAN – Two-lane Highway 138 is getting truck lanes where it climbs over the San Gabriel Mountains in San Bernardino County, aimed at reducing head-on collisions from motorists passing slower moving vehicles. The $44.4 million construction project, expected to be concluded in spring 2008, will close a three-mile section of the highway from south of the Highway 18 junction to Angeles Crest Highway to all traffic for three months starting in June. “We have had a high rate of accidents on Highway 138 as a whole. This is a safety improvement project,” Caltrans spokeswoman Terri Kasinga said. From June 19 through Sept. 19, the highway will be closed from Angeles Crest Highway north to Beekley Road, on the desert side of the summit. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
